As part of the TECTONIC project, the Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography research lab, Oceanus-Lab from the University of Patras gathered professionals from different fields and origins, motivating valuable conversations around heritage science. The secondment was carried out by Dr Dolores Elkin, Dr Chris Underwood, and Julieta Frère MA, from CONICET and MC (Argentina), and Chemical Engineer Lenka Nováková from Synpo (Czech Republic).
During their stay, workshops were organized in the University of Patras. A hands-on demonstration of materials developed through the TECTONIC program was presented by Synpo’s chemical researcher, where she presented a protective coating and a specialized adhesive used on underwater cultural remains. The Museum of Science and Technology hosted the three Argentinean archaeologists, who shared their work on research and management of UCH in the southernmost regions of South America. Urgent environmental concerns around potentially polluting wrecks were also addressed by Dr. Underwood.
The secondment also included fieldwork in the Cyclades Islands and the Gulf of Patras, offering valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and in-situ data collection. The experience strengthened institutional connections and contributed to advancing the project’s objectives through shared methodologies and dialogue with local experts.
